In the current road to Russia 2018, Peru has surprised everybody in the South American World Cup qualification stage. They were fifth in standings and are New Zealand’s next rival in the Intercontinental playoff. The ‘Incas’ are very close to return to a World Cup for a first time since 1982.
In 21st century, Peruvian football has been not relevant, until now. So Peru has an important history in the South American football and their national team was very respected in all the World.
Peru in the World Cup
Peru has four apparitions in the World Cup; last time in Spain 1982. They were in the first competition in 1930, and their best performance was in Mexico 1970, when they reached quarterfinals. Before elimination at the hands of Brazil, Peru got two victories against Bulgaria and Morocco and finished second in group 4, only under West Germany, who beat them 1-3.
In Argentina 1978, Peru won group 4 after two victories and one tie. In second round they had a poor performance, losing their three games against Brazil, Poland and Argentina; this last game was controversial because legend says Peru allowed six goals on purpose as a deal with host team to allow Argentina make the final. Host nation needed a wide margin to get a spot in final game against the Netherlands.

The Peru National Football team had two golden ages, the first in the 30s and the second from the 60s to early 80s. In both times, they won Copa America (1939 and 1975).
Teofilo Cubillas, nicknamed ‘El Nene’ is the most important footballer in Peruvian history. This former player was an attacking midfielder and He played 81 games with Peru team between 1968 to 1982, scoring 26 goals, the highest number in national squad ever. Cubillas were famous for his technique, shooting ability and free kick ability.
Other important Peruvian players who were part of National Team were Hugo Sotil, Cesar Cueto, Julio Cesar Uribe and Hector Chumpitaz. Currently Claudio Pizarro and Paolo Guerrero are the most representative Peruvian players.
